Swearingin NOW: Google’s Rubiks Cube, play here on Swearingin.com

Monday, May 19, 2014 1:44 PM

I love the Google doodles, which are those little dynamic logos that replace their standard logo when you go to Google.com. I’ve really liked some of these such as when they had the guitar your could strum and the pac man game. Well, today they have a Rubik’s cube. So, out of curiosity, I looked into the code, grabbed it (it’s available to anyone freely), and have put it here on Swearingin.com. I’m going to start grabbing some of the others I’ve liked, as well as having an embedded games and entertainment/activities section on here (and on Computer Magazine). So, click here (or on the cube gif pic below) to play the Rubik’s cube applet (which you can play on Google to, but if you’d rather here, or alternatively when they get rid of it there, it will still be here). rubikillusion And Read about it on Computer Magazine (ComputerMagazine.com): http://computermagazine.com/2014/05/19/rubiks-cube-google-doodle-will-drive-everyone-nuts-today/         #CTS (#Now).

Swearingin NOW: Prosecutors find another way to show us they all must have mental issues by charging a 16 year old girl with the murder of her fetus who died because it was stillborn (from the cord being wrapped around it’s neck)

Friday, April 4, 2014
5:32 PM

While Prosecutors showed their typical blood-lust to see every normal, innocent citizen and child rotting in prisons so that they can further bolster their careers and salaries, a Judge has taken the unusual steps of finally exhibiting some common sense.

A judge has dismissed murder charges against a Columbus, Mississippi resident who was charged with “depraved heart” murder after the 2006 stillborn death of her child, in a case that experts who would later review her medical record, say the most likely cause of death was “umbilical cord compression”. Lowndes County Circuit Court Judge Jim Kitchens issued his ruling Wednesday in the case against now 24-year-old Rennie Gibbs.

All women have new reasons to be greatly concerned for the health of their in-womb baby – for fear that they may face murder charges if the child is still born! Where will the insanity end?

Swearingin NOW: Man points an $8 laser pointer at the sky and gets 14 years in prison – am I the only one that seems to realize we, and our courts, have gone totally nuts?

Wednesday, April 3, 2014
4:21 PM

A news story circulated recently about a young guy sentenced to 14 years for pointing a laser pointer at a helicopter. Despite the tone of the post on Computer Magazine (that itself refers to a Gizmodo article) I really think we have gone nuts, and our judges and legal system are out of control. You get no argument from me that what the guy did was wrong, stupid, etc. But 14 years? Really? For pointing a toy pointing laser powered by a couple of AA batteries that was definitely NOT going to blind anyone?1394647669000-gan-lasers-18

Think of what 14 years will mean for this 25 year old-ish (not sure of his exact age) guy. Granted the guy apparently acted a fool in minor ways before. But 14 years?? He will be approaching 40 when he walks out of prison, a convicted felon, with no future, and with his girlfriend having long left him, his family, perhaps parents dead, having lost everything, 14 years is destroying someones life and future completely. Does the “crime” really warrant the punishment? I for one just think we have gone nuts, and the Judge who sentenced him should himself be facing a reprimand. I guess when it all finally goes too far, the prisons are full, half the population is in jail or prison, maybe then there will be a sudden social awakening and the pendulum will swing back the other way. When the Salem witch trials were going on, everyone was all on board, thinking it all made perfect sense and those convicted deserved their punishments. Someday we’ll look back on this period in our history in a similar way – Chris Swearingin.

Swearingin NOW: Microsoft released Office for iPad, finally, last week – some thoughts

Wednesday, April 2, 2014
9:45 PM

So Last week Microsoft finally launched Office for iPad. Are they too late to the party? Time will tell, because while they lumbered, other alternatives filled the gap nicely (I myself see not reason at this point to change from Google Docs on all my devices, and supplementing with LibreOffice on my PCs). But, this is Microsoft, and while the other big players these past few years are nimbly zipping around in the obvious hot markets with innovations and sewing up their following in Mobile, and even expanding out (Chromebook anyone?), Microsoft has been, well, hit or miss, and slow in doing so it would seem. But the question is, are they too late to the party?

Bill_Gates_Sundance

When I ask myself that question I think perhaps of a fitting analogy, of being at a party with me and 50 other unknown or half known industry guys, and Bill Gates sauntering in an hour late to the party (insert any well known, high profile figure in this analogy, but he kind of fits given the subject). Are many people going to be waiting for his arrival, when the whole group knows he’s coming, considering who he is? Once he is there, is his presence suddenly going to have a major influence, bring the music to a stop, and quickly have a circle around him flocking to meet him or hear him or just get a glimpse? Well, you can think of Microsoft and their Office arriving to the IOS party in the same way – late, but still it’s Microsoft after all, not some two-bit player, and this will have a major impact. However, does this mean Microsoft is finally turning their big battleship in the right direction? Time will tell, because for a long while now I’ve seen Microsoft on the slow path to irrelevance like so many other major players of yesteryear (ala Digital Research, Novell, Borland, Blackberry, and on and on). Perhaps none of those were the goliaths Microsoft has been, we’ll see if Microsoft can hang on to a major chunk of the industry now so cannibalized and conquered by former disregarded names that today seem so much more relevant than Microsoft (Google, Apple-the-come-back-kid, etc.) – Chris Swearingin

Swearingin NOW: Google tells the Supreme Court to mind their own buinsess, it was just fine for their Street View vehicles to also capture your WiFi data – and here’s why I agree with them!

Wednesday, April 2, 2014
7:12 PM

Google has told the Supreme Court to get bent and mind your own business, that sniffing out your personal data broadcast in (and from) your home router over WiFi was just fine as their Street View vehicles drove up and down residential and other public streets taking photos for their Google Maps, and simultaneously packet capturing your precious (and you thought private) airbound ones and zeros.streetview-google_2246854b

Well, believe it or not – I agree with them and their argument, um, from a Technical standpoint, that un-password protected, un-encrypted, broadcast WiFi constitutes a public airway therefore is free for them or anyone to do with it as they will. We have public WiFi hot-spots after all. HOWEVER, I don’t buy their argument on why they were doing it, and while I don’t think it should be “illegal” per se, you have to wonder why they were really doing it and be a little creeped out. Kind of like seeing the guy in the beat up chevy nova driving up and down your street staring at your kids who are playing in your front yard – um, it’s legal, but creepy, and you have to wonder what the nefarious intentions are.

It’s just a reminder to everyone to secure your router – change the WiFi key, turn on WPA2, hide your SSID, turn on MAC filtering, change the default admin password, and also secure each connected PC by blocking inbound ports with their personal firewalls and making sure the sites you send ANY important private data to are using HTTPS so your data is encrypted as it leaves your PC.streetview

Really Google has just given everyone a good heads up – who knows who is sniffing your packets, or just using your router with you unawares (usually a neighbor who has figured out that you have an unsecured WiFi and internet connection just asking to be hoped on now that he didn’t pay his cable bill and they pulled the plug on him.). Here’s articles on the news about all this Google hubbub today – Chris Swearingin

Swearingin NOW: New evidence suggests the universe is a bubble, among many multi-verse bubbles

April 2 2014
9:05 PM

In an article on Scientific American (and also talked about on Salon), new discoveries of ancient ripples in space-time are lending to the perhaps unverifiable theory that we are living in a Universe that is just one among infinite universe-bubbles. Are those “uni-bubbles” the other, alternate universes where (as the theory goes) every possible thing that can happen HAS happened in some alternate universe? I can’t WAIT for bubble-jumping technology (as I will now coin it) that will allow me to get over to the bubble-verse where I am “Dictator for Life” of the Galaxy and People Magazines Intergalactic-sexiest-man-alive! Swearingin NOW: Microsoft makes Windows free (um, not really, but here is a limp-wristed step forward finally)

April 2 2014
7:12 PM

As reported on Wired, Microsoft has (finally) decided to join this decade and give Windows away for free, like their more savvy competitors (Google Android, Linux..) have been doing for years, um, but there is a major catch, or should we say catches, that will mean you shouldn’t expect to be downloading a free copy of Windows for your home-brew PC anytime soon. This is for a limited, generally mobile version, for manufacturers, as another listless shot across the bow of Google’s android.

Granted, Microsoft has made, and is making, a fortune off of Windows licenses, but things are shifting in the industry in a way that the OS platform is not as relevant but merely a segue to cloud services. Microsoft has suffered from being the lumbering giant, allowing Google and Apple to really turn the tables on Microsoft in the past few years as they sauntered, scratching their heads, scoffing at their competitors. It’s funny because Microsoft’s industry position came in it’s younger, leaner, hungrier days when it turned the tables on another lumbering giant – IBM. Now IBM, like Apple, has remade ittself in many ways, and it’s time for Microsoft to wake up to the cloud and this shift in technology, in a BIG way. It’s clear they have woken up from their dead sleep of a few years ago, in a yawning, rubbing the sleep from their eyes kind of way,  but can they start acting with the rapidity of their leaner years to keep themselves relevant and claw their way back on top of the markets that they just turned their back on in denial? Let me know your thoughts. And read more at the link below – Chris Swearingin

Swearingin NOW: Tesla Motor’s Elon Musk blogs that he will add a Titanium shield to his cars under bodies to prevent impact fires

April 2 2014
6:30 PM

As noted in an article on TechCrunch, Elon Musk has posted on medium.com that the Tesla will have a titanium under body shield added, and retrofitted to existing vehicles, to prevent battery fires that made big news not long ago. Now if only the politicians would get their hands out of the deep pockets of the big 3/etc. and allow a true innovator to open dealerships and not be squashed by the incumbent, stagnate, but powerful old-school auto manufacturers (and tangled, wide, associated companies and interests such as dealerships and on and on), then we could see this next stage in the advancement of transportation really start to flourish in the mainstream – Chris Swearingin

Swearingin NOW: I believe in Technology! And a good TED talk.

March 31, 2014
11:31 AM

TEDTalksTop100

I really believe in the future of Technology (or I guess I wouldn’t be so immersed in this field). Ever since I was 10 years old and got my hands on a Commodore PET and started programming in basic (teaching myself quickly I became a sensation in my school for the programs I wrote when no one else knew how to program..which meant they didn’t know how to use the computer because you booted into a basic compiler back then, not an os interface). Their amazement really fueled and solidified my path, and the luxury of always finishing my math assignments way ahead of the rest of the class so I was the one who first got to go sit at the first computer the school district had purchased, the very first generation of micros…well, maybe 2nd if you see the altair/etc. as first..and no one was using it yet…it just sat there, this dream device I had read and heard about…begging me to learn how to make it do something. I caught the bug then and have never lost it.

Anyway, what do I mean “I believe in Technology.” Well, I mean, I believe it will continue to advance inevitably, ubiquitously, over the next decades and centuries ahead, evolving humanity along with it, and in all honestly, I think the merger of technology and man, even at the physical level is inevitable (extrapolate Google glass, Oculus, GPS, RFID, genetic engineering, and then also…the matrix, tony start and iron man, lol – a 100, 500 years from now, you get the picture of where we just must inevitably and without doubt are headed).

Now, in that, I’m not making a moral or value judgment about it – whether it is a good thing or bad, or right or wrong…I’ve just lived and breathed technology since I was 10 years old, enough to be confident that IS where we are headed, and many I’m sure see the obviousness of that to. Now that’s the assessment purely decoupled from my emotions about it. However, bringing that into the formula, I can say I (showing the pure geek in me yet again) am totally of the Star Trek mind – meaning, I doing see doom and gloom and the “end of days” ahead, I see the future in such a positive way, with technology and the advancement of man eventually solving hunger, violence, so much that afflicts us today, and taking us to the stars and places we can’t even imagine in abstract ways (abstract to us in 2014), both physical destinations, but especially in the oblique ways that we simply can’t foresee, as we couldn’t have foreseen the internet and what all that has sprung out of it. I see a continued, and exponential advancement of technical wonders.

Well, that makes for such exciting times ahead. I’m 45, and I’ve seen so much technology grow and come about that a decade before was just a fantasy (the ipad is a personal example, watching star trek next generation seeing that, and then it being here today, just incredible), and in the last 35 years of being neck deep and absorbed in this obsession, profession, I love, yet I can already see I’m not going to live to see the exciting things that will be happening 100 years from now, 200, 1000…I think it only gets more exciting as time goes on, in ways we can’t even imagine (will they extend life to where you live for hundreds of years, will they “solve” death, and allow one to transfer their mind to a digital brain replica when their first body wears out, will they all have jet packs or flying cars, wow, the things we can’t even imagine) – how exciting! Their will be ups and downs, and unforeseen negative consequences of some advancements as well that will have to be overcome, but this upward curve of mans advancement is inevitable, and science is the enabler of that advancement, and “Technology” is the fruition of that advancement.

And, I said ALL of that simply to introduce an excellent Ted-talks video I just watched, kind of on that same topic, very inspiring. And yes, autonomous cars are just on the horizon and will be a game changer for us all. – Chris

Swearingin NOW: Donations! (and, really, a how-to)

March 31, 2014

Swearingin.com now accepts BitCoins! Donate to my BitCoin account at the link provided below. Lol, well, yes I have a BitCoin account (I think they are trading at around $450ish per coin, but I have my donations link set to a modest .1 bitcoin, and if you feel randomly generous you can donate to my BitCoin OR Paypal account at my donations page. Um, but, otherwise, I’ve added this simple example on my site here on an unlinked page at http://Swearingin.com/wcontent/donations/ as a quick and dirty method to show others how this will work on their site (a friends site I’m working on as a casual project – so there you go check it out…). But again, if you feel froggy, by all means I can always use more money! 🙂

I Just got back from my run a bit ago, still a little cool out there, when oh when will spring really start being spring. During my run I thought “dang, how looooong is this run going to take today, i’m hurting, jeezz”, so checked my stop watch app and I had been running 37 seconds, LOL! I think because the past few days my legs have been hurting so bad again, just wearing out these already old legs. So, I ended up having a good hour run anyway, and felt better probably 10 minutes in. Ok, more later.
